New Gate, Derry / Londonderry, 2003, watercolour with body colour, 18.5 x 13.5 cm
This is New Gate in Derry (Londonderry), Northern Ireland. It is the newest of the gates and was built in order to facilitate access to the Talbot Theatre, which was the first theatre to be built in Derry, and which is now a Church of Ireland Diosecan office. It is the white building on the left of the picture.
The powers that be are about to rip out the insides of the building to create offices etc. To mark the passing of this event it was decided to stage George Farquhar's (Farquar's !) comedy 'The Beaux Stratagem'. George Farquar was a native of Derry and the Beaux Strategem was the first play to be staged at the Talbot Theatre. The current production runs from Thursday 17th February to Saturday 19th February. It is directed by the well known theatre director Jonathan Burgess, who has put on many plays both in Derry's Playhouse (down Pump Street to the left before you get to the gate) and the new Waterside Theatre on the other side of the river to us and whose banks can be seen through the gate.
Here are pictures of all the members of the cast of Farquhar's (Farquar's) Beaux Strategem at The Talbot Theatre Derry/Londonderry as they appear on a friend of mine's website http://veryderry.com
