This is something I wrote many years ago as a way of trying to put my thoughts together before writing up my phd thesis in automatic speech recognition.
It is an essay that critically reviews our principal ideas in the area of knowledge, perception, language and artificial intelligence.
It's a quirky sort of thing that assumes the reader has read everything I ever read but I give references.
It covers a considerable swathe of the problem area and makes a few suggestions of its own.
They seemed valid then and seem valid still.
